Such Nice Iranians!!

除了去年新生註冊那天和我同車出發
後來三不五時就會在舞會或電梯或超市遇到的伊朗男S
(只記得他名字唸起來像三角函數的sin)

和系館燒掉那天在宿舍13樓陽台上關心火勢
剛好站在旁邊就聊了起來後來發現也是faculty of architecture
而且恰巧住在我隔壁的伊朗正妹S
　
我實在是很容易和伊朗人偶遇啊
或者說他們都很熱心助人
就會和像我這樣的trouble maker打上交道
　
先是上禮拜三在路邊等紅綠燈被我攔下來
好心還倒楣地繞遠路載我去Aula的3ME的博士生
(抱歉他名字的發音對我的舌頭來說太難了 只記得住在Roland的287室)
　
今天晚上在ground floor修我那台破爛到無以復加的腳踏車...
先聲明三民把車給我的時候除了踩起來像漫步在雲端的踏板
其它狀況其實是很OK的
　
但在長期超速行駛又被冬雪冰凍了兩次以後
能壞的能掉的都壞得掉得差不多了
只維持在"可以騎"的底限
　
剎車剩左邊能用
右邊的剎車壞了但不是不能剎
而是更糟地一直處於剎住的狀態...
　
前後輪的擋泥板的兩側支撐都斷了
因此和其它零件碰撞導致的噪音
讓我光用耳朵都可以辨識Delft路段的平坦度
　
騎個車叮鈴匡鐺吵到受到路人的注目就罷了
沒有支撐最麻煩的副作用是
擋泥板是直接貼掛在車輪上的...
　
每次騎腳踏車都像上健身房
要和動靜摩擦力對抗...
導致我"最快從宿舍飆到系館"的記錄是在雨天創下的
　
後座的橡膠繫帶也彈性疲乏到極限脆斷了
齒輪的皮套以開口笑的姿態勉強虛掩著
更不要說生鏽的鈴鐺和只剩支撐架但沒有燈的車燈座了...
　
anyway~
搏鬥了十幾分鐘還是掛不回移位的鏈條以後
五公尺外也在修腳踏車的男子二人組走了過來
　
又是拔工具相助的伊朗人啊...
取得我同意後就馬上動手了
就這樣邊修邊聊邊和路過的人打招呼...
　
我突然發現來來往往的路人(我們在電祶口旁)
竟然十之八九都是他們認識
要不就停下來聊兩句要不就打個招呼示意的...
　
雖然一個多小時內
也路過了五個我認識的傢伙 (台灣人x1, 新加坡x1, 韓國人x1, 土耳其人x1, 加拿大華僑x1)
但比起那位讀industrial design然後名字開頭是M的伊朗男真是差遠了
　
說到這裡你可能就要好奇為什麼修個落鏈可以修快兩個小時了...
因為這位執著的伊朗朋友
在試騎了我的腳踏車以後...
　
" How you tolerate it?
You are so patient!!
I really can't imagine..."
　
接著他就開始東拆西缷地調整了起來
先是鬆開了後輪"一直剎著的"剎車
再把因為呈60度所以無法均勻施力的腳踏板敲回直線
　
後輪的擋泥板竟讓他給掛回去了
軸輪的小罐子也填了油
本來他還想拆前輪的...
　
但已經是半夜十二點半了
他的朋友先回去煮飯等他了
才就罷手了
　
印象深刻的是他對中國哲學很感興趣
和我聊孔子和孟子
可惜我的英文程度遠不及我的國學程度
　
像君子喻於義小人喻於利這種句子
不要說喻於義喻於利的境界翻不出來
我連君子和小人要用哪個單字都不確定...
　
很妙的是他們走過來之前
他的朋友猜我是亞洲人
他猜我的南美洲人...
　
南美欸...
這近一年來我頂多被誤會是中國人或日本人
不過在我說出I come from Taiwan以後...
　
他朋友那句"台灣產的腳的腳踏車很有名"
真是讓我尷尬到一個極點
該說我辱沒國風嗎...
　
結論是
在家靠父母 出外靠朋友 出國靠路人
我還真是好運到不得不每天滿懷感激啊～
　

關於今年申請TU Delft的疑慮...? (請入內)

dear sir/madam,

I am a student in my MSc2 now. Some of my friends in my country (I come from Taiwan) contacted me and asked about the admission for the next academic year. They've sent out their applications to TUDelft, and some of them confirmed that their applications were delivered to Faculty of Architecture already. Just want to ask if the procedure will be continued? (For those who already got their admission letters, those who are still waiting for the results, and those who maybe want to apply in the future.) They're quite worried about the situation, because their documents may be destroyed in the fire as well. Will the faculty will accept new students for the coming year? If yes, for those whose documents were destroyed already, will they have any chance to re-apply within new deadline? Furthermore, for some people who got the admission letters already, they applied for more than one schools at the same time, and now is almost the time to make a decision. If TU Delft won't accept new students for the coming year, they need to reply to other schools as soon as possible. The situation is a bit urgent for them... Thank you very much. And looking forward to hear from you soon.

Dear Yu Liu, (...... 亞洲人的姓/名有這麼難分嗎......)

All the students that applied at TU Delft and were admitted, were put on the waiting list or were still in the process of being evaluated have received a letter in which we explain the situation and tell them what they need to do.
We will continue to admit students as usual and we can assure that the quality of our education will be as good as always.

Attached I send you a copy of the general letter which was sent. Some applicants may have received a letter with additional information about how to resend their portfolios if it got lost.

I hope this answers your questions. Should any of your friends be in doubt about his or her personal application, please state name and MSc number (if known) so that we can look into the problem.

Dear student,

As you may have heard in various news broadcasts, the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology was destroyed in a serious fire on Tuesday May 13. Although this is unfortunate, we are very glad that no personal injuries have occurred. Also we have been able to save valuable collections of scale models and chairs by famous architects such as Rietveld.

Thanks to the help of numerous colleagues and relations in the field of education, architecture and business, our education, research and examination activities will be continued as from next Monday. Lecture rooms, instruction rooms and offices have partly been found at other faculties. Also large tents have been erected to house our teaching activities during the last few weeks of the spring term. We are confident that we will close this academic year without any delays.

The academic year 2008-2009 will start in September, as planned, both for our Dutch and our international students. We can assure you that the quality of our education will be of the high standards that characterize our faculty.

We can assure you that we will find alternative accommodation for our faculty within two weeks.

Our international office staff have been allocated new offices already and they have resumed work since Wednesday. In principle all our procedures and deadlines will be applied as planned. Should anything out of the ordinary arise concerning your specific situation, we will inform you individually by email.

你毋庸置疑是那樣的人

多事之秋

禮拜天超開心的Lake BBQ結束以後
就是接二連三的衰事湧上
短短三天已是如此漫長
　
先是禮拜一睡醒
發現房門因為不知名原因打開了
還好人沒事東西也沒丟
　
當晚焦慮了一整夜睡不好
半夜頻頻起床檢查門戶
然後拖著疲憊的身軀準備要去上設計課
　
後來就不用詳述了...
系館都還沒等我踏進一步
就在熊熊大火中灰飛煙滅了
　
下午沮喪萬分地離開Aula
去DUWO拜託他們幫我加一個室內鎖
被拒絕後到police station備案
　
這下我真的是道地的咕嚕人了
罰單也繳過了
現在連警察局都進了
　
傍晚BK塌了以後
和Guner兩個人焦慮地互相安慰
一起得了high rise fire恐懼症
　
偏偏我宿舍還在13樓...
再結合前一晚造成的門戶大開恐懼症
又累又難成眠啊...
　
禮拜三早上九點在Aula有說明會
匆忙下樓以後發現腳踏車竟然壞了
只好去路邊攔一個倒楣鬼載我去學校
　
倒楣鬼更倒楣的是通往學校那座橋被關閉了
他得載著我繞遠路到運河的另外一邊
還要在聽到我是建築系的學生以後say i am sorry
　
說明會讓我見識到咕嚕人的從容堅毅
一邊危機處理還可以一邊搞笑
整場說明會下來笑點不斷
　
結束以後studio集合宣布緊急措施
人脈極好的Winy Maas先生決定要全員移陣到Berlage去
也就是接下來兩個禮拜workshop我們得每天通車...
　
然後World Wonder的人代傳Deborah的指示
說禮拜五deadline的essay照原計畫繳交
系館倒了人沒倒所以不予延期嗎
　
Please deliver hard copy of the essay assignment with the A5 notebook to 13 south secretary...
對啦
最好現在還有13 south secretary這種東西...
　
慘的是本來想用沒課的禮拜四趕報告的計畫也被破壞了
tutors說我們還是來看一下進度好了
明天下午一點大家Berlage見啊
　
所以下午苦哈哈地唸了一堆reading
現在用壞掉的手敲著鍵盤...
上禮拜交完Roemer那篇3000字的essay廢掉的右手...

The Crown Was Fallen, the Tough Time Is Coming

 If you have never been to TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture before, it's too late for you to come- forever.
 
This morning I got a phone call from Carolyn around 9:30, and she said "oh, take your time, there is a fire alarm in BK, we're coming out now." Usually I got calls because of being late (sorry I always sleep late and never be in time for the studio), and if anything delay and reschedule was announced, someone will inform me. Because Carolyn's voice was so easy... I thought just someone did some stupid thing to activate the alarm by accident. Maybe one or two hours later we can go in back again. Anyway... I left my room and took my bike. On my way to school, I met Victor (another guy in our studio, he was going home) on the bridge. I noticed that the smoke from the campus was heavier than I supposed. I kept cycling. When I arrived, I was so stunned by the scene in front of me. Cordons were set around the area already and flames and smoke kept coming out from the southern part of our faculty. Fire started from the 6th floor and spread quickly. In two hours, half of the building was brunt down.
 
Studio guys met each others on the main road and went to Aula (congress center beside the central library) to listen to the Dean of Faculty. There, I met one of my tutor, Lidy, in rMIT last semester. She was quite sad about this terrible thing. I really can't imagine how many things we lose! All books, all computers, all research data since the faculty was founded, all design projects in progress... everything was gone in hours! Especially for teachers, all their academic efforts- for years or even for all their lives- can't be get back anymore. Dutch architecture would be damaged and become backward so much... TU Delft is such an important institute in Europe, but now all valuable resources was lost. I don't know how we can continue our school till the end of this semester... not to mention that where I should start my final project for next year. When we had lunch on the roof of the library, keeping eyes on BK... the other half part of the building was in fire as well... 13th floor, where our studio was in, was brunt out and turned black.
 
15hrs, they sent a email saying that the fire at the Faculty of Architecture is not yet under control. Around 5pm, when I was with Guner in her room, Ryan (Canadian guy in our studio) messaged her and said that our 13th floor started to collapse. We went out to the corridor and looked towards the campus. The fire and smoke was still on. Our 13th floor was totally destroyed by fire- no more Green Dreams, no more World Wonders, no more red carpet. The crown of DSD+T?F was fallen. (At the beginning, when Winy Maas conceived the idea of our studio, 13th floor was on the top of BK, looking down to the whole campus.) Now even in Rotterdam you can see the smoke all over the sky of Delft. I don't want to say it's destiny but everyone here knows how bad lucky the timing was. Water pipes got some problems this early morning and they just turned off the water spray systems. A coffee machine was broken then. And then just hours, the whole building was lost. I am also feeling lost now...
